Can you believe it’s already been six months since The Dyke Pub closed its doors and reopened as The Emporium furniture shop?
So what’s happened since 3rd September 2016?
Within days of the pub closing, the local community rallied in support, taking part in a demonstration on Dyke Road. A Facebook group quickly gained 700 members, and the ‘Save The Dyke Pub’ group was formed. Volunteers gathered over 1400 signatures on a petition to retrospectively grant the pub ACV (Asset of Community Value) status. The petition, along with the ACV application itself, was submitted to Brighton & Hove Council, and in December The Dyke was granted ACV status. Caroline Lucas has offered her support for the campaign, along with many local Councillors.
The owners Martin Webb and Warrick Armsby-Ward inform us that they will shortly be submitting a planning application to the Council. Their plans involve building two three-storey townhouses at the rear of the building, converting the upstairs into an apartment and re-opening half of the building as a small pub alongside the Emporium shop.
In February, the Dyke Pub Preservation Society was launched at a meeting at The Church of the Good Shepherd. The DPPS intends to raise funds to buy the freehold of The Dyke Pub, so that, rather than building on the site, it can be retained as a permanent pub, garden and community space. With newly confirmed financial backing from the Plunkett Foundation, the DPPS is arranging to carry out an independent valuation of the building and grounds so that interested parties can be invited to contribute funds.
To raise funds (specifically for printing the DPPS prospectus, brochure and share application form pack) there will be a Quiz Night at Exeter Street Hall on Saturday 18th March – entry is £2 per person – please join our Facebook event and let us know if you can donate any prizes!
